DRIFTS
Sourced from driftwood typically found on Block Island, an island 13 miles off the coast of Rhode Island, works in the DRIFT series represent the dialogue between the human and non-human worlds. As landscape paintings that serve as impermanent monuments, sculptures, and incorporate elements of self-portrait, the pieces are created using colors inspired by the natural world, with a focus on rare configurations and bold combinations. The works are also visual quips that seek to arrive at deeper, preverbal resonances between the earthly, natural, and wild, where Langlands believes more complex perspectives toward essence, experience, and value — especially humor — reveal themselves and draw out our less-guarded selves.
